colocation

Colocation is very similar to the service that is provided by a dedicated server. The only real difference between colocated hosting and dedicated hosting is that with colocation, you own the server instead of renting it. That is to say that if you are colocation capable, you are not in search of a server through which you can purchase space, because you do, in fact, own the server. With colocation, since you own the server, the only costs come from a fee paid for maintenance and bandwidth. Another benefit of colocation and owning your own server is the fact that you can become a web host for other ecommerce companies.

If you are a hosting customer who has full control over all aspects of your website and the way it operates, but you're not able to host the site yourself, then you are a good fit for colocation hosting. Typically, a colocation provider will offer some kind of "Server Monitoring" contract that guarantees the provider's responsibility for making sure your system is running properly. However, A Server Monitoring contract is not applicable when a custom written application on your server is causing the problems. In this situation, the colocation host is not responsible for system repair. Rectifying server hardware problems also depends on whom you choose as a provider. Some providers require a hardware contract that stipulates their responsibility should a hardware problem cause your system to fall offline. Generally speaking, if you don't have a hardware contract & you don't employ your own technician, the only way to resolve the problem is to pay the host more money to repair the hardware problem themselves.

When choosing a colocation provider, what are some things to keep in mind?

  • Bandwidth: How much bandwidth does the provider offer? What are the costs associated with exceeding said limit?
  • Server Monitoring: Is there anyone watching your site to make sure it is running properly?
  • Backup: What kind (if any) of backup does the provider make available?
  • Hardware Maintenance: Does the provider offer a hardware contract to ensure the reparation of hardware malfunctions?
  • Internet Connectivity: How many connections does the provider have to the Internet? I.E, in case of failure, is there a backup connection?
